Personal Statement
I would describe my recent practise as being based within painting utilising an array of visual events and the multiple layering of forms, gestures and planes of colour. The inherent visual events often appear to jostle for position and attention. Gesture and linear hard edges reside alongside each other in an attempt to deny the sufficiency and/or, underline through contrast, the differences of either visual device. Through a long process of delineation within forms, scraping back and rebuilding I would hope to arrive at not only a rich narrative of making but an uneasy landscape. I have recently experimented with the creation of three dimensional compositions comprising of painted panels of card. From the outset this has been experimental and embarked upon in a playful manner in the hope that it would help to inform further work. My work references aspects of architecture, photography and set design and I feel that these may represent fruitful avenues of research.
My practise and professional productivity have been concerned with development within the arts which comprises of personal development and reflection, studio ergonomics and the provision of support to art practitioners, creating opportunities within the arts, engaging with the public and endorsing creativity and critical thought through teaching. Studying at Masters level would form the foundation for my future aspirations which include exhibiting, curating, international residencies and collaborations and would offer the potential for developments in writing and reviewing and the prospect of lecturing within higher education.
